MOUNTAIN!
A POEM IN FOUR PARTS
by Alice B. Clagett

Rustic Canyon Trail:
Three Poems
(Summer 2000)

These mountains
pour me out
into the sunset …

Like a rose-colored quilt,
sunset spills down
upon this mountain fastness …

Brisk mountain walls
unfold into the sunset.

. . . . .

Approaching Tapia Subunit,
Malibu Creek State Park
(Summer 2000)

Wind blows.

The dappled shade of trees flirts with the asphalt

And my heart has lost its way.

Shall we rest
. . . . . amongst these whispering bells of grass?

. . . . .

At Whitney Portal
(October 2000)

Heart’s rest …

Listen to the high far keening of the stars!

. . . . .

In Topanga Canyon
(Winter 2002)

In January
white Ceanothus clouds
powder the mountains
with soft promise.

. . . . .
