Opium Dreams and Sunlit Lakes … a poem by Alice B. Clagett

The use of the word ‘opium’ herein
is allegorical rather than literal …

A Poem by Alice B. Clagett

I know a place
Where opium oozes down a mountainside
Into a little lake,
And turns the sparkling waters
To a leaden sleep.
And then when daylight sends
The bloom of dawn to all the Earth,
That lake sleeps on, and never knows
The joy of sunlit happiness.

I know another lake
Tucked into the mountains
Of a far off land,
Where sunlight
Ambles down the mountainsides
And dips its brilliant light
Into the tiny waves.

And all night long,
When people are asleep,
That lake limns
The farther stars
Into their dreamtime hearts.

So the question is:
Which lake will I pick
To sit by today?
